Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote with its charme

Since 1852 Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote.

With more than 40.000 habitants the town on the east coast of the island is the biggest city of Lanzarote and its economic centre.

The city centre with its old and historic department stores invites not only to do shopping, also to stay and rest in its lovely inner courtyards.

More shopping in the extraordinary air of the metropolis is possible on the famous Calle Leon y Castillo and its back roads.

After a long walk through the city centre it is nice to cool down the hurting feet by dipping them into sea water on the cultivated city beach 'Playa del reducto'. Sitting on the white sand one can easily imagine the quiter days on the island.

Interesting information about the islands history and its very own culture are to be found in the archeological museum in the 'Castillo de San Gabriel', rebuilt after having catched fire in the 16 th century.

By a visit to the 'Charco San Gines' tourists are able to see the former fishing village in the growing town. 'Charco San Gines' is the carefully renovated old harbour and a beautiful sight. On the northern part of the big harbour cruise liner are landing. Other harbour parts play a big role in the economy of the island.
